Zach Marvin and Blake Schneider connected on a third-quarter touchdown pass, but that was the lone highlight as visiting Clay beat Maumee 49-7 on 2019’s opening night of high school football.
Marvin found Schneider on a 10-yard TD pass to cap off a 5-play, 60-yard drive late in the third quarter. The drive was keyed by Caden Brookshier’s 55-yard reception on the second play.
Clay went up 35-0 at halftime thanks to a 28-point second quarter that saw Jordan Pettaway score twice, once on a 54-yard run and once on a 10-yard return of a blocked punt.
The Eagles (1-0) rushed for 178 yards, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. Pettaway led the way with 70 yards and two TDs, and quarterback Logan Heintschel had 69 yards and two scores.
Brookshier led the Panthers (0-1) with 47 rushing yards and 83 receiving yards. He averaged more than 8 yards from scrimmage on his 16 touches.
Marvin completed 8-of-16 passes for 135 yards and a TD, getting intercepted twice.
