The Panthers boys’ soccer team traveled west to face the Bryan Golden Bears on a rainy Saturday afternoon. After two tough losses to Northview and Anthony Wayne, Maumee was looking for a win against the Golden Bears. Despite the steady rain and soggy conditions, the Panthers passed the ball effectively and kept control most of the first half. Senior Kyle Robinson scored first with an assist from fellow forward Tyler Nayfack to put Maumee up 1-0. Bryan answered back with a goal of their own to tie the game, but a long pass by senior defender Adam Diegel to senior forward Braden Wagener gave the Panthers the lead again. Wagener scored again with an assist by Robinson, and senior defender Brent Freeman added to the score with assists by Wagener and Nayfack, giving Maumee a 4-1 lead at the half.
Early in the second half, the Golden Bears scored to narrow Maumee’s lead to 4-2, but solid aggressive play by seniors Sam LaChapelle and Konner Byers as well as sophomore T.J. Carney kept Maumee in the lead for the remainder of the match. Wagener completed his hat trick with another assist by Robinson and the game ended with a Maumee victory with a score of 5-3.
