The Maumee Panthers boys’ soccer team battled the Golden Bears from Bryan to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers began the game by playing what might be their best half of soccer all year. Play was even throughout the half with the ball spending equal time on each side of the field. The Golden Bears had very few real threats, as the Maumee defense led by junior Aidan McGann thwarted all attacks. Maumee’s offense showed much more life and ended the half ahead as junior TJ Carney scored from outside of the box to take a 1-0 lead.
The hard fought battle continued into the second half, with both teams playing hard. The Golden Bears evened the score off a set play from the corner that was headed into the Maumee goal. With the game tied 1-1, the intensity of the match ratcheted up. It seemed the Golden Bears would take the lead, making a strong shot from point blank range with about 5 minutes remaining in the contest. However, Maumee’s goal keeper, junior Isaac Tolbert, had other ideas, laying out to make a fantastic save to maintain the draw.
The Panthers play Napoleon next at 7pm on Tuesday night at Kazmaier Stadium.
