Emily Baker attended Maumee High School from 1990-1994 and participated in cross country, basketball, track and softball. She earned four varsity letters in cross country and track, three varsity letters in basketball and one varsity letter in softball.
In basketball, Emily earned honorable mention All-Northern Lakes League (NLL) as a junior and second-team All-NLL as a senior. She was also selected to the second-team All-Northwest Ohio and was team captain her senior year. In track, she was named the team’s Most Valuable Runner her senior year, and earned honorable mention All-NLL honors in running the 800-meter race. In cross country, Emily was selected captain of the team for her junior and senior seasons.
Emily graduated in the top ten of her class, was a member of the National Honor Society her junior and senior year. She received a Richard Kazmaier Scholarship following her career at Maumee High School. Emily graduated with honors from Emory University School of Law in 2001. Emily currently stays active by running in marathons, such as the Virginia Beach Half-Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon, and the New York City Marathon.
Andy Pollock attended Maumee High School from 1990-1994. He participated in football, soccer, basketball, volleyball and tennis. In soccer, Andy earned Honorable Mention All-Northern Lakes League (NLL) for one season as well as First Team All-NLL as a senior. Also as a senior, he was recognized as a First Team All-District performer, a First Team All-Ohio performer and as a First Team All-Central American performer. In football, Andy was recognized as a First Team All-NLL punter and kicker. He also earned recognition as First Team All-District and First Team All-Ohio. In basketball, Andy earned Honorable Mention All-NLL as a junior.
Andy went on to Bowling Green State University and started as their punter for three years. He earned Honorable Mention All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) in 1996 and Second Team All-MAC in 1998. Andy finished seventh in the country in punting his senior year and was voted BGSU’s Special Teams Player of the Year.
Matt LaVrar attended Maumee High School from 1991-1995. He participated in football and track. In football, Matt earned First Team All-Northern Lakes League (NLL) for three years. He was named First Team All-District and Second Team All-State his junior year. In his senior year, Matt earned First Team All-Ohio, Defensive Player of the Year, Division II Defensive Player of the Year, National Blue Chip All-American, and National USA Today All-American.
In track, Matt threw the shot put and was NLL champion on three occasions. Matt was also district champion on three occasions, regional champion on one occasion and top ten in the state on one occasion. He also established Maumee High School and NLL records.
Matt went on to play football for The Ohio State University on a full athletic scholarship. He earned four varsity letters and on four occasions was named a Big-Ten Scholar-Athlete. Matt started at defensive end as a sophomore, played on two Big Ten championship teams, a team that won a Rose Bowl and a team that won a Sugar Bowl.
Bill Wellstead attended Maumee High School from 1955-1959. He earned ten varsity letters in football, basketball and track. Bill was First Team All-Conference in football and led the conference in scoring because, as he says, his teammates were good blockers. He was the co-captain of the basketball team his junior year and then captain as a senior with the team winning the conference both years. He also set a school record in the 220-yard dash in track that lasted several years.
Bill went on to play football at Dartmouth College where he played offensive end and kicking specialist on their undefeated Ivy League Championship team. That year Bill was first in the nation in points scored by kicking. He also was selected to the All-Ivy League Academic football team. Bill obtained his Master’s Degree from Harvard before beginning his professional career during which he was a published author of several articles in professional journals.
