Panthers News · Maumee High School Celebrates Five National Letter of Intent Signings

On Wednesday, February 14th, student-athletes, parents, family members and coaches attended a belated National Letter of Intent signing ceremony for Panther seniors Mike Haney (football), Matt Lucas (track & CC), Brandon Phillips (wrestling), Caleb Brown (football) and Matt Dalton (football).

Mike will attend Eastern Michigan University, an NCAA DI school and a member of the Mid-American Conference.  He will play football for head coach Chris Creighton.  Said Coach Gibson: “Mikey showed talent during the summer of his freshman year and really gave the coaches no choice but to play him.  As a four-year starter, he showed improvement every year through his work ethic and it has paid off.”

Matt Lucas will attend Malone University, an NCAA DII school and a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.  Matt will run cross country and track for head coach Jack Hazen.  Said Coach Snyder: “Matt’s commitment to distance running excellence began during his years at Gateway.  His dedication has resulted in two state championship qualifications in cross country and two NLL titles in track.  He is 5th all-time at MHS in cross country and 5th all-time at MHS in track in the 2 mile.”

Brandon will attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, an NCAA DI school and a member of the Patriot League.  Brandon will wrestle for head coach Kevin Ward.  Said Coach Walczak: “Brandon is one of the most competitive and hardworking wrestlers I have ever coached in my 15 years as the head coach.”

Matt Dalton will attend Bluffton University, an NCAA DIII school and member of the Heartland Athletic Conference.  Matt will play football for head coach Denny Dorrel.  Said Coach Gibson: “Matt put in a lot of hard work and became one of the team’s strongest players.  He was a dedicated teammate and through his hard work in the classroom and the weight room, he has given himself the opportunity to continue his football career.”

Caleb Brown will attend Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, an NCAA DIII school and a member of the Heartland Athletic Conference.  Caleb will play football for Head Coach Jeff Sokol and the Fightin’ Engineers.  Coach Gibson: “Caleb was a four-year starter and all-league performer for three years at different positions.  He succeeded no matter where the coaches thought he might be best utilized, and always did so with great effort.”
