Multiple Teams · Regional Track Meet

The Maumee boys’ track team had 3 individuals and 1 relay team qualify for the OHSAA Track & Field Regional Meet in Amherst. To qualify for Regionals, you must finish in the top 4 places at the District meet. Qualifying for Regionals were Senior Brian Utter in the 300m Hurdles, sophomore Zak Kirk in the 3200m, freshman Matt Lucas in the 1600m and the boys’ 4×800 team of senior Austin Sholl, senior Malik Khalfani, Lucas, and Kirk.

Brian Utter’s goal all season was to break a school record; at Regional finals he accomplished that goal. With only one year of high school track experience, senior Brian Utter is the current Maumee High School 300m hurdle record holder with a time of 38.88. “He is just a natural track athlete,” said Coach Marcy Williams. Utter placed 5th overall in the 300m hurdles at Regionals, missing qualifying for State by less than 3 tenths of a second. “He is a hard working athlete that has done everything we asked of him this season; he is going to be a great loss to the team next year,” said hurdle coach Vern Kiehl. We hope that he continues to compete at the college level. Utter will be attending Heidelberg College in the fall where he will be playing football and hopefully running track.

Sophomore Zak Kirk placed 8th in the 3200m run with a time of 9:47.35. We were excited for Zak to get on the podium in the 3200 with his 8th-place finish. During his race, while trying to pass a competitor, Zak got spiked in the back of his leg finishing the race with a battle wound! He will be one of best in the state in this event for the next two years.

Matt Lucas (freshman) ran a very strong 1600m race to finish 10th with a time of 4:32.12. “To be the only freshman in the race says a lot about his work ethic and competitive spirit,” said Coach Snyder. He will be a strong contender for the Regional title in that event over the next three years.

The boys 4×800 team finished 11th overall with a time of 8:17.84. “We didn’t run as well as we wanted to in the 4×800,” said distance coach Craig Snyder, but Sholl and Khalfani were three-time Regional qualifiers in this event. Not many people can say they’ve been to Regionals three times.
